How the industry is organised
The industry has three layers: factories that sculpt, mould and finish dolls; brands that put their name on a range, sometimes made at their own factory and sometimes by another; and retailers that resell several brands or the factory's own lines. A "brand" may therefore be a manufacturer, a label or a store. We rely on public information and do not claim factory visits, so we treat origin and capability claims as claims. See methodology.
Where dolls are made
| Region | Typical position | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| China | Largest production base | Wide range from budget to premium |
| Japan | Premium and niche | Often hand-finished, high prices (Japanese brands) |
| USA | Premium, custom | Notable makers such as Abyss Creations (RealDoll review) |
| Europe | Small-scale and resellers | See regional guide |
| Our articles leading manufacturing countries and largest manufacturer discuss this in more depth. |
OEM, white label and resellers
Original equipment manufacturers (OEM) build for others who label the product; white-label dolls are sold under multiple names. This is why similar-looking dolls appear on different sites at different prices. See white-label and reseller brands. Indicators include identical photos, identical specifications and the same model codes across stores.
What this means for you
- A reseller's reputation and warranty matter more to you than the factory name
- Repairs and replacement parts are easier if the factory is established
- Price differences between resellers can reflect service, not quality
- Custom work is usually done at the factory, so lead times vary
Questions to ask
Ask the seller which factory or brand makes the doll, whether it is made to order or in stock, what warranty is provided by whom and where spare parts come from. A seller who will not say may be hiding reselling arrangements. See 25 questions to ask a seller.

Verifying claims
Be cautious of claims such as "factory direct" or "our own factory" without evidence; see factory direct vs reseller vs marketplace. Independent photos and long-standing owner reports are more reliable than marketing.
Where a retailer fits
A retailer such as Joy Love Dolls stocks dolls from multiple makers and states warehouse locations; our review describes what it publishes. Judge it as a seller and check the maker of the specific model. >> jl=all | Check which brand or maker is named on a Joy Love Dolls product page and ask support if it is not stated.
Key takeaways
- Many brands share factories
- The seller's warranty matters more than factory claims
- Ask who makes the doll and who stands behind it
- Treat "factory direct" as a claim to verify
