Why drying matters more than washing
Washing removes residue; drying prevents the problems that residue starts: mould, musty odour, sticky patches and powder clumping. Trapped moisture is the root cause of most storage problems. A doll that is clean but damp is worse off than one that is slightly less clean but dry.
Step by step
### 1. Remove water Pat the surface with clean, absorbent towels. Press rather than rub, since rubbing can wear painted details and drag the skin. ### 2. Open up folds and joints Gently open armpits, groin, behind the knees, the neck gap and the base of the breasts and dry them. Moisture hides there. ### 3. Dry the insert or channel Remove a removable insert and air dry it standing on a towel. For a fixed channel, blot with a clean cloth wrapped around a long tool and let it air out (internal cleaning). ### 4. Air dry in a supported position Lay the doll on clean towels or place it in a supported seated or lying position away from direct sun, radiators and heaters. Avoid positions that bend joints for hours. ### 5. Check by touch Run a dry hand over the skin and into folds. Anything that feels cool or damp needs more time.
What not to do
| Do not | Why |
|---|---|
| Use a hair dryer or heater | Heat can damage TPE and soften material |
| Dry in direct sunlight | Heat and UV damage |
| Rub hard with rough towels | Wears paint and surface |
| Powder a damp doll | Clumps and can encourage mould |
| Store while damp | Mould and odour |
How long it takes
There is no universal time. Warmth, humidity and the doll's size change it. In humid rooms use a fan on low, aimed at the room rather than directly at the doll, and extend drying time. Do not rush.
Drying after bathing
If you wash in a shower or bath, the drying step is the same, with extra care for the neck and head connection and joints (bathing and showering).
After drying
When fully dry, dust TPE lightly with suitable powder (powder), dress in light fabrics (fabrics) and store properly (storage). If a musty smell persists see mould.
Wigs and clothing
Wigs and clothes hold moisture too. Remove and dry them separately before putting them back on the doll (wig care). >> jl=all | See towels, powders and storage items listed with dolls at Joy Love Dolls and confirm they suit your doll's material.
Troubleshooting damp problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Musty smell a day after drying | Moisture left in the channel or armpit folds | Re-open folds, dry again, leave the doll in a ventilated room; see mould guide if it persists |
| White or grey spots | Powder clumped on damp skin, or early mould | Wipe with a damp cloth, dry fully and compare with the mould guide |
| Skin feels cool for hours | Water retained near the surface or inside | Keep drying in a warm, but not hot, room |
| Sticky film after drying | Soap residue | Rinse again with lukewarm water, then dry |
A worked example
Say you wash a medium-weight doll in the evening. Pat it down, open the armpits, groin and neck and dry them with a fresh towel. Stand the removable insert on a towel to drain. Lay the doll on clean towels in a room at normal temperature with the door open for airflow. Next morning, check three spots by hand: the channel opening, the armpits and the back of the knees. If any feels cool, give it a few more hours. Only then powder and dress it.
Humid climates and winter drying
In a humid climate, drying takes noticeably longer and a small fan moving room air helps. A dehumidifier in the room is a safer accelerator than any heat source. In winter, avoid placing the doll beside a radiator to speed things up; uneven heat is exactly what TPE dislikes (temperature guide).
Towels and tools worth having
Use plain cotton or microfibre towels you keep for this purpose, a long soft cloth for channel work and clean surfaces to lay the doll on. Avoid coloured towels that may transfer dye to light skin tones; test on a hidden area first.
Frequently asked questions
01How long does a doll take to dry?
It varies with room warmth, humidity and doll size, from a few hours to longer. Check by touch, including folds and channels.
02Can I use a hair dryer?
No; heat can damage the material.
03What if I smell damp after drying?
Moisture may be trapped. Dry again and read the mould guide.
04Do I dry before powdering?
Yes; powder only on completely dry skin.
