Principles
Dolls are heavy and floppy, and joints bend in ways you do not expect. The aim is to keep the body supported as one unit. Protect your back and the doll's joints.
One-person lift for lighter dolls
- Place the doll on a stable surface
- Slide one arm under the shoulders and another under the hips or knees
- Keep the head supported in the crook of your arm
- Bend your knees, lift with your legs and keep the doll close
- Move slowly; set down by reversing the steps
Two-person lift
One person supports the head and shoulders, the other the hips and legs. Agree a count and move together. This is the safer method for any doll you cannot lift alone comfortably.
Aids
| Aid | Use |
|---|---|
| Blanket or sheet | Slide a doll over smooth floors |
| Moving straps | Spread load; follow instructions |
| Trolley or hand truck | For long moves; secure the doll |
| Furniture sliders | Moving a box |
What to avoid
- Pulling by limbs, which can damage joints and tear skin
- Lifting by the neck or head alone
- Carrying a wet, slippery doll alone
- Ignoring back pain; seek medical advice
Positioning on a bed or chair
Use pillows to support head and joints and avoid prolonged strain (poses and handling, joint care).

- Bed to bath, medium doll, one person: seat the doll on the bed edge, hug it to your chest, stand with bent knees and take short steps. Set it on a towel in the tub rather than lowering it all the way.
- Storage box to bed, heavy doll, two people: one person takes the shoulders and head, the other the hips and knees; count aloud and lift together.
- Moving a doll through a doorway: measure the doorway, tilt rather than turn, and keep one person guiding the head.
Protecting the doll
Wrap the doll in a clean sheet when moving, support the head so the neck does not whip, and avoid pinching the skin in your grip. Use flat hands rather than fingertips to spread pressure. Do not let the feet drag.
Protecting yourself
Check the doll's weight in the spec sheet (spec sheet guide); if it is more than you would comfortably lift in any other context, plan for a second person. Wear non-slip footwear, clear rugs, and stop if you feel strain. Heavier doll buyers should consider a lighter model (lighter dolls).
Aids worth considering
A flat sliding sheet, moving blankets and a small hand truck can handle most routes at home. Straps should be soft and wide; never loop a narrow strap around the neck or limbs.
