Why we do not quote rates
Import duty and VAT rules for low-value parcels have been revised in several regions recently, and goods from particular origins have faced additional tariffs at times. Any number we printed would likely go out of date. This page shows you how to find your own figure from an official source and how to avoid surprises.
What decides what you pay
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Declared value | Basis for duty and VAT; must be accurate |
| Classification | The tariff code the goods fall under |
| Origin | Some origins attract extra duties |
| Destination rules | Thresholds, VAT collection method |
| Shipping term | Seller (DDP) or buyer (DAP) pays |
Where to check
- United States: CBP internet purchases and USPS prepaid import duties
- United Kingdom: GOV.UK goods sent from abroad
- European Union: European Commission taxation and customs and your national customs site
- Canada: CBSA
- Australia: Australian Border Force
How to avoid surprises
- Ask the seller whether duties and VAT are included and get it in writing (DDP vs DAP)
- Ask for the delivered price
- Keep the commercial invoice and tracking
- Do not request or accept misdeclared value; it can cause penalties and held parcels
- Budget a margin (hidden costs)
If you are asked to pay
Carrier requests for duty are normal under DAP, but scam messages posing as couriers or customs exist. Pay through the carrier's official site, not links in unsolicited messages. See held parcels.

Customs authorities typically apply duty on the declared value, sometimes including shipping, then VAT or sales tax on the total. Rates depend on classification, value thresholds and country, and thresholds change, so verify with your authority.
A worked example structure
Use this template rather than numbers: goods value + shipping and insurance = customs value; duty = customs value × duty rate; VAT or sales tax = (customs value + duty) × tax rate; plus any carrier handling fee. Fill in current rates from your authority (CBP, GOV.UK).
Who pays
Under DDP the seller pays at or before delivery; under DAP you pay on delivery (DDP vs DAP). Get it in writing.
Declared value and description
Do not ask a seller to understate value; it is unlawful in many places and can cause seizures or fines. Descriptions on customs forms vary by seller; that is a policy matter for them.
Frequently asked questions

03Who pays, buyer or seller?
