Couples and Dolls: Questions to Ask Before Bringing One Into a Relationship

This post is about couples and dolls. We do not have reader questions we can publish, and we are not going to invent them. What we can do is set out the questions that couples considering a doll should talk through, following our guide to sex dolls for couples. That guide says some couples use a doll as a shared toy, for fantasy, or during separation or health difficulties; that they should talk first, agree boundaries, treat hygiene seriously and see a doll as an addition and not a fix for communication problems; and that any shared doll should be used with clean, compatible lubricant and barriers.

This is not relationship counselling, and we are not qualified to give it. If you are in difficulty, a qualified counsellor or therapist is the right person to ask.

Why couples consider a doll

People give different reasons.

  • Fantasy and variety. A shared toy, something new.
  • Separation. One partner is away for long periods.
  • Health. An illness, injury or medication that changes what is possible or comfortable.
  • Differing desires. A way to explore something one partner wants and the other is happy to include.
  • Curiosity. Plain interest, with no problem to solve.

None of these is wrong in itself. What matters is that both people are comfortable.

Talk first, before you shop

The most important step is a conversation, and it happens before anyone looks at a catalogue.

Questions to discuss

  • What do each of us want from this, in our own words?
  • What would each of us not be comfortable with?
  • Is this a shared purchase, or one partner's? What does each of us expect about use?
  • How would we feel if one of us used it alone, or if we used it together?
  • What would make either of us uncomfortable later, and how would we say so?
  • Who decides if we want to stop, sell it or put it away?
  • Who else lives here, and how do we handle privacy?

Agree that either of you can change your mind. If one partner feels pressured, that is a problem to resolve first, and a doll will not resolve it.

What a doll cannot do

A doll cannot repair a lack of communication, intimacy or trust. If it is being proposed as a way to avoid a conversation, or to compensate for something unspoken, pause. Our guide describes a doll as an addition, not a fix, and that is the right way to see it. Research on doll ownership is limited and mixed, as we discuss in our post on what the research says; none of it says a doll improves a relationship.

Agreeing boundaries

Boundaries do not need to be elaborate, but they should be explicit.

  • Use: together, separately, or both.
  • Privacy: where it is kept, who may know, and what happens if a visitor or family member finds out.
  • Images: whether photographs are taken, and if so where they are stored and shared. Our guide on doll photography covers privacy basics. Do not use an image of a real person in a way they have not agreed to.
  • Spending: a budget, including shipping, duties and care.
  • Review points: a time to check in, such as after the first month. Our post on the first month with a doll describes what to expect.

Hygiene when more than one person is involved

This is the part to treat seriously. Our guide says to use any shared doll with clean, compatible lubricant and barriers.

  • Clean thoroughly between uses, as our cleaning guide describes, and dry fully.
  • Use barriers such as condoms where appropriate, and change them. A doll can carry contamination between users if it is not cleaned or protected.
  • Choose compatible lubricant. See our post on lubricant and dolls.
  • Do not share between people with an unresolved infection, and talk to a health professional if you are unsure about risks.
  • Keep removable parts clean and replace them if they wear.

See our safety and hygiene guide for more. We are not medical professionals, and anyone with a health concern should seek medical advice.

Practical choices for couples

  • Format. A smaller or lighter doll, or a torso, may be easier to handle together and to store. Our post on torso or full doll compares them.
  • Weight. Test it together. Our post on how heavy is too heavy shows how.
  • Which partner's preferences? If you have different tastes, compare the shortlist side by side and take your time. Our posts on male dolls and trans dolls cover some alternatives.
  • Storage and privacy. Agree where it lives. See our post on storage setups.
  • Delivery. Decide who receives it, and when. See our post on discreet packaging.

If it does not work out

Some couples find that a doll is not for them. That is a reasonable outcome, and it is better to know. Agree beforehand what you would do: store it, sell it or dispose of it. Check the seller's return policy before ordering, since many do not accept returns for change of mind. Our warranty and return guide explains typical terms, and our review of Joy Love Dolls describes one retailer's limited returns policy.

Where to browse together

Browsing a catalogue together can be part of the conversation. The Joy Love Dolls catalogue shows a large range, and our article on male dolls for men and women and review of Silicon Wives give you more to compare. The Joy Love link is an affiliate link: we may earn a commission if you buy through it, at no extra cost to you, and it does not suggest that a doll is right for any couple.

Summary

Talk first, agree boundaries, treat hygiene seriously, and keep in mind that a doll adds something, not repairs something. If you are struggling as a couple, speak to a qualified counsellor. If you are both comfortable, plan the practicalities as you would for any doll.
