The reason for the increasing demand for sex toys is partly because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdowns that it caused. In addition, public entertainment venues where hook-ups between people happen is closed indefinitely. For this reason, those who cannot find a human bedroom partner turn to sex toys to satisfy their needs.

Sex Toy Demand Increase is Also Caused By the Change in the Younger Generation’s Attitude in Terms of Sex

There is a change in the attitudes of the younger generation, as well as the more open-minded demographic when it comes to sex. This is another reason why the demand for sex toys is increasing.

The popular sex and relationship advice blogger Yi Heng noted that a lot of sexually active women have their minds open when it comes to using sex toys. In fact, they see this activity as something normal and natural.

Yi has more than 700,000 followers on Weibo, a social media platform similar to Twitter. There, she hosts discussion groups with topics about sex and relationships. In addition, she believes that Chinese women are driving the sex toy market.

Furthermore, China is known for its conservative attitudes towards sex. In fact, pornography is banned in the country. Chinese authorities even launched periodic crackdowns against vulgar online content.

Xi Jinping, the president of China, is pushing clean and righteous cyberspace. In addition, the whole Chinese government is seeking to promote traditional family values and marriage in hopes to revive the country’s declining birth rates.

However, the divorce rate in the country reached a record high of over 3.1 million during the first nine months of last year. This is a sign that societal values are changing in the country.

Women are becoming more and more empowered about what they want in the bedroom. For this reason, women who are aged 30 and younger are now becoming more comfortable when it comes to using sex toys.

Yi also explained that there are times when women do not find the pleasures and orgasms that they really want because the skills of their partners in bed are not enough. This is the reason why females are more motivated in looking for a way to pleasure themselves.

The domestic sex toy sales in China lag far behind Japan and other Western countries. However, iiMedia, a Chinese research firm said that the country’s sex toy market is valued at more than 100 billion yuan or $14.7 billion. This market is driven mostly by female and millennial consumers.

Searches for the keyword “sex toys” on the search engine Baidu increased significantly between January and June. This was according to Steffi Noel, an analyst at Daxue Consulting, a market research firm based in Shanghai.

However, Noel added that the surge in domestic demand for sex toys during the pandemic may not result in major long-term growth. According to her, the majority of those who bought sex toys during the COVID-19 were first-time buyers. For 70 percent of these purchasers, it will likely be a one-time purchase.

On the other hand, sex toy demand overseas is also insatiable. Noel said that the increase in orders came from Italy, France, and the US. Those orders were mainly sex dolls and vibrators.

AliExpress, a Chinese e-commerce giant said that exports increased by 50 percent year on year during the first half of 2020. This is because sex toy manufacturing companies are working to increase their production in order to meet the demand coming from other countries whose people are also in lockdown.

According to Feng, the manager of the sex doll manufacturing company Shengyi Adult Products Co. in Shenzen, they have reached their company’s full production capacity. Now, the company exports more than 1,000 sex dolls every month.

Furthermore, Amy said that she is hoping that Chinese society will slowly become more accepting of sex toys. She hopes that such things will eventually be seen as something normal.

In addition, Amy noted that she wants everyone to experience the kind of happiness that she is feeling. This is because happiness through sex toys is something that you can give yourself and is very easy to have.

The sex toy industry is indeed rising. Soon enough, the world will entirely accept the existence of sex toys and sex dolls and will see such items as normal. Now that the COVID-19 pandemic is forcing everyone to remain in quarantine for an indefinite amount of time, there is a higher chance that the sales of sex dolls and sex toys will increase more than now.

Needless to say, the sex toy and sex doll industry will forever be a part of people’s lives. It is here to stay so the industry will become bigger in the coming years.
