You find a tear. The first thing to know is that it is common, and the second is that the worst thing you can do is act in a hurry. This post is a decision guide: what to check before you touch the damage, when a home repair is reasonable, and when to stop and contact the seller. It does not replace the step-by-step method in our TPE repair guide, which is where to go once you have decided to repair.

We do not sell repair products, and we have not tested every adhesive on the market, so we describe what to look for rather than naming a winner.

Step 0: stop, and do not make it worse

  • Stop using the doll. Movement and pressure can extend a tear.
  • Do not pull or cut at the damage. Trimming a ragged edge can turn a small problem into a big one.
  • Do not reach for household glue. Many adhesives are not compatible with TPE and can damage it or leave a hard, brittle patch.
  • Keep the doll clean and dry. Dirt and moisture make a repair fail.
  • Take photos. Photograph the damage from several angles, with a coin or ruler for scale. You may need them for a warranty claim.

Step 1: check the warranty first

Our repair guide says to check the warranty first, and we would put that above everything else. Some sellers will repair or replace a damaged part, particularly if the damage appeared soon after delivery, and a DIY repair can affect that. Read the warranty terms, or if you cannot find them, ask. Our warranty and returns guide explains what to look for, and our unboxing checklist explains why photos on arrival matter.

If the damage was present on delivery, contact the seller straight away, with photos, and do not attempt a repair. Our review of Joy Love Dolls says returns are limited to a product that does not arrive or looks different from the picture, which is another reason to document problems promptly. Check the current terms for whichever seller you used.

Step 2: what material is it?

Repair methods differ. Our guide covers TPE, and it says silicone dolls need different methods. If you are not sure which material your doll is, ask the seller before you use anything on it. Our materials guide explains the differences, and our posts on TPE and silicone explain why. A product that works on TPE may not work on silicone, and the reverse.

Step 3: how big, and where?

This is the key decision. Use the following to sort the damage.

Usually reasonable to repair yourself

  • Small tears and cuts in a flat area of the body, away from joints and stress points.
  • Seam splits that are short and clean.
  • Small surface nicks where there is no missing material.

For these, our guide says repair early, using TPE-specific adhesive and filler, cleaning and drying the area first, and letting the repair cure fully before use. Early matters, because a small tear grows under use.

Stop and ask the seller

  • Large tears, or any damage where material is missing.
  • Damage near a joint, the neck, the wrist or the ankle. These areas move, so a repair has to flex without failing, and they may be close to the skeleton.
  • Damage that exposes the skeleton or internal structure.
  • Damage to a removable part or a connection, where a poor repair could affect fit.
  • Anything you do not understand. If you are not sure what you are looking at, ask.
  • Damage that is still spreading.

Our guide puts it simply: large or skeletal damage needs the seller. Send photos, describe how it happened, and ask what they recommend.

Step 4: if you repair it

If the damage is small and you are within your rights to repair it, the main points from our guide are:

  • Use TPE-specific products. Look for adhesive and filler made for TPE, and check the product says so. Ask the seller if they recommend a particular kind.
  • Clean and dry the area first. Mild soap and water, then dry fully. See our cleaning guide.
  • Apply sparingly. Follow the product's instructions, and do not overfill.
  • Let it cure fully. Resist the urge to test it early. Cure time depends on the product, so read the label.
  • Seal and finish as directed. Some repairs need powder or a sealing step to stop a tacky patch.
  • Test on a hidden area first if you are unsure how a product behaves.
  • Check it afterwards. Look at the repair before and after use for signs that it is lifting or spreading.

We are not going to give you cure times or quantities, because they depend on the product and the doll, and the instructions that come with a product are more reliable than a general rule.

Preventing the next tear

Most tears have an ordinary cause. Prevention is mostly about handling and storage.

  • Support the body when lifting, and do not pull on limbs or the head.
  • Avoid sharp edges, zips, jewellery and rough fabric.
  • Store it properly. Heat, cold and bad positions stress the material. See our posts on winter care and summer care, and our storage guide.
  • Keep to a schedule. Our maintenance schedule helps you spot small problems before they grow.
  • Know your weight limit. A doll that is too heavy to handle safely is more likely to be damaged. See our post on how heavy is too heavy.

Where to find supplies

Our reviews of TPE Doll and Silicon Wives mention accessories and care products among what those retailers sell. For a repair kit alongside other supplies, the Joy Love Dolls catalogue is one place to look; check that any kit says it is for your doll's material. That is an affiliate link: we may earn a commission if you buy through it, at no extra cost to you, and it does not change our repair advice.

The decision in one list

  • Stop using the doll, photograph the damage and keep it clean and dry.
  • Check the warranty, and contact the seller if it was damaged on arrival.
  • Confirm the material.
  • Small, flat, clean damage: repair early with TPE-specific products.
  • Large, near a joint or skeleton, or unclear: ask the seller.
  • Let any repair cure fully before use.
