Sex Robots: Will They Do More Harm Than Good?

The world has become more and more sexually liberated. For this reason, people now have all the sex toys that they could ever need. There are now countless websites that sell sex dolls as if they are selling clothes to people. Needless to say, the sex doll industry is becoming more mainstream.

Another thing that is becoming really popular right now is sex robots. They are an upgraded version of the regular sex dolls. Unlike, lifeless dolls, sex robots can talk, moan, warm themselves up, and even smile. But the question is, will sex robots do good, or will they do more harm?

Sex Robots: Will They Do More Harm Than Good?

What You Need to Know About Sex Robots

The days of inflatable sex dolls are already gone. For the past few years, the sex doll industry has witnessed the development and improvement of sex dolls into sex robots.

Sex robots are realistic dolls that can be customized to fit the needs and desires of customers. There are times when such dolls are integrated with some artificial intelligence, allowing them to carry a simple conversation.

Moreover, there are a lot of opinions circulating about these new and extremely expensive dolls. In addition, plenty of documentaries have already featured debates about whether sex robots can improve a person’s life or not. Some also argue that sex robots may lead to sexually deviant dystopia.

Yet, sex robot inventors and manufacturers are arguing that these life-like creations cannot cause any harm. In fact, they even suggested that sex robots have the potential to prevent negative outcomes in terms of mental health. It may also help to prevent sexual assault and harassment. Sex robots can do these by offering men a reliable outlet where they can release their intimate heat.

However, there isn’t any proof that sex robots can provide the aforementioned benefits. Researchers from London-based St. George’s University Hospitals National Health Service partnered with the Women’s Health Academic Centre at King’s College London. The two recently conducted a study in order to answer the question of whether or not sex robots can bring any benefit.

Can Sex Robots Cause Lesser Risk of Violence and Infections?

Chantal Cox-George and Susan Bewley, the scientists from the aforementioned facilities, began the study by checking databases for any information about potential evidence that may support claims that using sex robots could have therapeutic effects.

In addition, they did comprehensive searches on the internet. They also talked to cross-disciplinary experts. Soon enough, the two found out that there is not any specialized literature proving that sex robots can bring any positive effect to a person’s state of health.

However, the researchers were able to find out that there are four themes that describe the claimed benefits brought by sex robots to potential users as well as society. Below are the four themes that Cox-George and Bewley named in the paper that they published:

Sex Robots: Will They Do More Harm Than Good?

  1. Safer sex
  2. Therapeutic potential
  3. Potential to treat pedophiles and sex offenders
  4. Changing societal norms.

Moreover, the current claims that support these hyper-realistic sex dolls are suggesting that through the use of them, potential purchasers would no longer feel tempted to engage in sex tourism or support sex trafficking.

In addition, sex robots allegedly promote safe sex. This is because these dolls are made of washable materials and are also resistant to bacteria. There are also claims that they could be used as a therapeutic aid for people who have the potential to engage in pedophilia or different forms of sexual assault and harassment.

However, since is no hard evidence that can support the above ideas. For this reason, the authors argued that they will remain nothing but a sign of wishful thinking.

Cox-George and Bewley also wrote that the benefits of sex robots are speculative. It is not proven that the development of a sex robot marketplace will provide a lesser risk of infections and violence. In addition, no one can prove that they can drive further exploitation of human sex workers.

Moreover, a claim about safer sex can be problematic. The reason is that no one knows who will assume responsibility in an instance that the sex robot malfunctions, or if it was not cleaned or monitored properly.

The authors also emphasized that there can be legal liability ramifications in case that the engineering of sex robots fail and lead to infection or injury. This can happen due to unclear responsibility for cleaning protocols and condoms.

The Use of Sex Robots and Healthcare Does not have Any Relation

Another much-discussed topic is the benefits that sex robots can bring to people who cannot enjoy a healthful sex life due to various health conditions. Such include disability, erectile dysfunction, aging, or even loss of a partner.

This may be a legitimate claim which can serve as a strong reason for a person to buy a sex robot. However, the researchers warned that the effects may not be what the users expect. For instance, sex robots have the potential to heighten an already existing sense of lack of intimacy. This is because sex robots, despite their capability to talk, move, and smile, are still lifeless. They do not have the ability to reciprocate desire and feelings.

Moreover, there is also a claim that sex robots could be the solution for sexual deviancy or violence. But Cox-George and Bewley are worried that these dolls may rather normalize and even strengthen these urges. The researchers said that it can even lead to addictive behavior.

In addition, the researchers are concerned about the effect of sex robots’ artificially flawless appearance. These dolls have idealized features, such as perfect skin, sexy body, and lack of body hair. According to the researchers, these can have an effect on the user’s perception of what is attractive and normal in a potential partner.

In conclusion, Cox-George and Bewley noted that regardless of the health-related benefits claimed by sex robot manufacturers, the sale and use of such dolls have a very minimal relation with such concerns.
